It all started when I ran across a post about Yunohost and thought to myself, why am I still using a corporate Plesk installation? At the time I was not very confident, just dipping my toe in the world of self-hosting, and worried about what would happen if anything crashed. But it's not like that anymore, and the $30+/month Plesk subscription adds up fast.
After learning a little bit more about Yunohost, especially that it isn't containerized, I decided to see what other options were out there and I've been down that rabbit hole for a few days now. It's always so exciting to learn about new tools, I start blowing up Gemini with what-ifs and how-tos, and after a ton of that kind of thing, I have a plan.
Over the next couple of weeks, I'll be moving slowly but surely to a fully FLOSS architecture, using Caddy and Docker to host my several Wordpress installations as well as this Ghost blog. That's going to open the door for all kinds of other self-hosted tools like Postiz, NextCloud, and more that I was having trouble with on Plesk.
This is exciting for so many reasons beyond digital sovereignty, and I'm excited to share more about it as time passes. And I'll be documenting my experience as I go, in case it's helpful to others.
